Pontypridd firm buys Swansea-based Diamond Holidays

Jason Edwards of Edwards Coaches said the firm would try to honour coach holidays that had been booked but the picture does not look so good for Diamond customers who paid for day trips

A buyer has been found for Wales' largest holiday coach operator, which went into administration earlier this month.

Edwards Coaches has taken over Diamond Holidays for an undisclosed sum.

It said it would be contacting everyone who had bookings with the failed firm and would do its utmost to honour them.

Pontypridd-based Edwards, which employs 245 staff and operates 140 vehicles, said it would retain a number of staff at Diamond's Swansea headquarters.

Administrator Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) said Edwards Coaches, the largest privately-owned coach company in the country, had bought the Diamond Holidays name, goodwill and future holiday bookings, along with Brian Isaacs Ltd that was also part of the business.

Company director Jason Edwards said: "Diamond Holidays offered a quality service to discerning customers and had a loyal client base.

"We have a similar product, operating the best coaches to the best hotels.

"Neither company compromise on quality and this is why customers from both entities will combine so well.

"Historically Diamond's clients have taken Edwards tours and vice-versa."

Extra staff

Since Diamond went into administration Edwards said it had received an influx of passengers contacting them looking for coach holidays.

Edwards said it sold almost £1m worth of holidays last week and had drafted in extra staff to cope.

It has had a presence in Swansea since opening the Coach Holiday Centre in Plymouth Street, near the city's new bus station.

But its main operating centre is in Llantwit Fardre with satellite depots in Treforest, Abercynon and Newport. It also has travel shops in Cardiff and Blackwood.

It said it hoped to operate coaches from the Diamond depot in Swansea to serve customers in west Wales.

Roger Hale, joint administrator and director at PwC, said the sale was completed on Monday.

"The administrators would like to thank the customers of both companies for their cooperation over the last two weeks," he added.

"We understand that Edwards will be looking to contact Diamond Holidays' and Brian Isaacs' customers who have made reservations over the course of the next few days.

"The administrators will work with Edwards to ensure appropriate communications are made with all customers in due course."

Customers who are booked to travel with Diamond Holidays or Brian Isaac are asked to contact 01792 791981 for more information.

UK Based Holidays Set To Increase

The Coach Tourism Council (CTC) has predicted a good year for coach operators.

The association questioned its members on various trends in 2010 and 2011, and says the 'staycation' is here to stay.

Coaches followed the domestic travel trend in 2010 with almost 50% of operators reporting that UK based coach tours had performed better than in 2009.

In the final quarter of 2010, 32% of operators experienced an increase in trips taken within the UK compared to those taken in 2009. They also experienced a reduction in trips to Europe.

It is thought that this pattern is a reflection of the increased value of the euro which hits spend on the continent, as well as an increase in awareness of what is being offered in the UK.

This extra attention to UK trips and tours has led to many operators introducing new, even more exciting coach itineraries.

The trend is expected to continue, and overall operators are optimistic for 2011, with more than 70% saying bookings would increase or at minimum continue at the same rate despite the VAT increase at the beginning of 2011.
